Starting a course in Georgia involves more than finding accommodation and paying tuition. Your immigration papers need to fit the programme, your entry conditions and the time you expect to study. We help you prepare a study residence application with a clear list of documents and a filing plan that takes your present stay into account.
Send the name of your institution, the programme, your age and whether you are already in Georgia. If you have only an offer of admission or are still choosing a course, say so. We will explain which stage matters for the residence documents and what to request from the institution before you arrange translations.
Who qualifies for study residence?
The current study residence category is for adults studying a higher or vocational educational programme at an authorised institution in Georgia. The institution’s status and the actual programme matter. A general language course, a school place or a letter offering admission should not be treated as automatic proof that an applicant meets this residence category.
For minors or general-school education, the applicable visa and family arrangements need a separate check; the law contains a distinct D6 visa category. Tell us about a child’s age and school before relying on advice written for adult university students. We can explain which immigration questions to resolve alongside enrolment.
Ask the institution for the right certificate
The application needs a certificate from the authorised Georgian institution confirming that you are studying the qualifying programme and stating the expected duration of study. Check that your name and passport details are correct and that the programme and dates are clear. Keep admission correspondence and fee-payment documents available if further explanation is needed.
Before making a long rental commitment, speak with the institution about its academic calendar, attendance requirements, tuition schedule and the issue of certificates for residence applications. These practical points help avoid a gap between arriving, enrolling and having the papers ready to file.
Documents for a student application
- The completed application and a valid passport.
- Evidence of lawful stay in Georgia.
- The authorised institution’s certificate confirming the qualifying study and anticipated duration.
- Qualifying financial evidence and relationship documents where a relative’s income is used.
- An electronic colour photograph and proof of the government processing-fee payment.
- Any certification, translation or representation papers needed for your particular documents.
Our residence document checklist explains the common certification and translation questions. Bring the actual papers rather than ordering every possible translation in advance; we help you identify what is needed for the application you will submit.
How to show funds for your studies
The official checklist allows the relevant lawful income of the applicant, a Georgian citizen or a relative with residence rights in Georgia, with proof of the family connection where applicable. Money in the applicant’s personal bank account may also count. When a bank balance is used, the amount for each month of the requested permit must be at least twice the subsistence minimum for an average consumer.
There is no useful single bank-balance figure for every student and every period. We explain the calculation using the relevant official amount and your requested term. If a family member is funding your studies, tell us where they live, their status and which financial papers are available before relying on their support for the residence application.
Entry conditions, filing dates and fees
Check your passport, entry basis and remaining lawful stay before planning the application. The general residence-filing rule requires at least 40 calendar days before lawful stay expires, subject to the applicable exceptions. Paying for a ten-day processing service does not remove that filing requirement. If you are still abroad, we can explain the relevant study visa questions before travel.
The study residence state fees are GEL 300 for the 30th calendar day, GEL 450 for the 20th and GEL 600 for the 10th. These cover official processing. Tuition, translations, certification, legal assistance and residence-card costs are separate. Read the application process guide to see how the filing and card stages fit together.
After approval and before renewal
Arrange your residence card and the required address formalities, and keep your expiry date with your academic dates. Ask the institution when it can issue the next study certificate. Contact us before changing programme, interrupting study or finishing your course so we can explain how the change affects the residence basis.
Study residence does not by itself settle permission to take paid work. If you have a job offer or plan to provide services, check the current work rules for that activity. Periods spent in Georgia for study are excluded from the general ten-year temporary-residence calculation for permanent residence; do not plan a future application by simply adding every year in the country.
If your spouse or children will move too, discuss their position separately. Enrolment does not automatically cover the whole family. Our family residence page explains the starting questions, while the living in Georgia guide covers housing, banking and everyday arrangements.
